The Mangerton Valley

A tiny lane threads its way from the main Bridport to Beaminster road, taking you in only a few minutes deep into the heart of hidden West Dorset, with its peaceful farm land tucked in amongst tiny, perfectly-formed hills and gentle valleys.

Here you will find Mangerton- a working seventeenth century watermill, the granary, a farmhouse, a few crumbly stone farm buildings and a scattering of farm cottages. You could easily be in rural France. Yet despite its apparently remote setting, Mangerton is well connected and in no time at all you can be in Bridport or Beaminster, or down onto the magnificent Jurassic Coast.

The peaceful old water mill and millpond offer course fishing in a one and a half acre lake with varying depths of up to 20 feet. It is well stocked with carp (up to 28lb), roach and tench. There are two submerged islands in the lake where the carp like to bask.The mill house provides a perfect setting for teas, a rural museum and delightful riverside walks.

You may choose to explore further along the valley of the tiny River Manger to discover the bluebell woods, farm tracks, and a string of quintessentially English hamlets and farms where time seems to have stood still and birdsong, wildflowers, and honey-coloured cottages and farmhouses abound.
